Six Attributes Every Volunteer Must Have
“Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve…. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”—Martin Luther King, Jr.
Volunteers are people who extend their time, effort, and even money to individuals who are in need of help. They offer their hand without asking anything in return. Indeed, they play an integral part in the accomplishment of every organization’s mission.
NSU Development & Cultural Association – North America, more known as NDCA, is a charitable organization that is dedicated to helping people across the globe. We invite people to become volunteers. You think you have what it takes to become one? Read on to know the top six attributes every great volunteer must possess.
- Committed
If you want to become a volunteer, you need to commit to it. There is no time for excuses. You should always make good on your words. There are times when you are given many tasks. Make sure to follow through them. You cannot just slack off. Remember that many people are counting on you. - Positive
No matter how exhausted you are, do not frown. This can give off a negative vibe. Instead, plaster a big smile on your face. A smile never fails to brighten anyone’s day. So whenever you interact with your recipients, give them your warmest smile. - Passionate
Volunteering is not a duty. Do not act as if it is. Do it because you want to and not because you need to. That is why you are called a “volunteer”. - Selfless
Perhaps, the very core of volunteering is selflessness. It is about giving your time and effort to a cause you believe in. You want to help people just because you want to. You do not expect to gain anything from it. Great volunteers think less about what they can get and more on what they can contribute. - Flexible
When you volunteer, you do not only play one role. There are times when you are given various roles. Be flexible and make sure that you are ready to jump in and help with any tasks that may arise. - Team Player
Volunteering is not a one-man show. It is a collective effort. When you volunteer, you work with a lot of people who have the same goal as you. It is important that you work well with your team. Be friendly and respect each other’s differences.
At NDCA, we aim to better the lives of the people around the globe by helping them climb out of poverty. You can help us by becoming a volunteer. Visit our website at www.ndcanorthamerica.org to learn more about us.
